Description
If you walked into a class ready to learn new material only to find out you already know all the material, what would you do? Would you drop the class and enroll in something more challenging, or ask your teacher for more level-appropriate material? Our gifted learners often run into similar issues but don’t have the ability to drop classes or seek out more appropriate curriculum. Join Heather Clark, the Gifted Coordinator for the Licking County ESC and learn strategies to help you effectively compact and expand your curriculum to help gifted learners grow, no matter how far ahead of grade level standards they are.
In this 2-hour course you will explore:
- The basics of curriculum compacting
- How to apply key concepts and strategies, including the compactor form, extension activities, and classroom expectations within the classroom
- Identifying students who would benefit from curriculum compaction
This course addresses the following standards:
ODE Competencies: a, c, f
NAGC Standards: 3, 4, 5

The ideas were helpful – very similar to what I already have ready for my gifted kids. However, the curriculum compacting would provide more opportunities for the student to lead their own learning (once demonstrating mastery of grade level concept.
