Description
During this 1-hour course, Dr. Juntune shares the findings of research started at Texas A&M University and the interventions being implemented in El Paso ISD to change the way we view and serve gifted students from poverty.
In this course you will learn three steps to improving success rates for low SES:
- Mind Sketching: A teaching technique that encourages students to sketch out the concept behind their answer while they come up with the words to communicate it.
- Building Verbal Intelligence: Children living in poverty have a simple language structure and we must give them a complex language structure.
- How to design a Gifted Program Specifically For These Students

The course was helpful, however, I would have liked more information on how to specifically use these plus more strategies with students such as the mind sketching, etc. Perhaps a clip of a teacher actually utilizing the strategy in the classroom.

I love the way Dr. Joyce Juntune breaks down the characteristics and unifying patterns observed in gifted children in poverty. She points out the inequities that exist and makes a case for how urgently we should be addressing the problem in the classroom. Very important work to be aware of and advocate for.

I think any training focusing on students in poverty should be taught by someone who has come from that background. This training very clearly ignored major systemic issues regarding race and poverty. We need to be changing the way we identify gifted students first.
