Developing verbal intelligence is what makes the difference between academic success and failure for students raised in poverty. Most of these students score well in nonverbal intelligence but well below their peers in verbal intelligence. In Closing the Achievement Gap for Students Raised in Poverty – Building Complex Language, Dr. Joyce Juntune helps teachers identify how building complex language helps students develop their nonverbal skills into verbal skills, which is the key to helping them towards academic achievement.

Description

When working with students from a low-income community, Dr. Joyce Juntune discovered that some of the students didn’t know the word for "train" or how to describe what it did — even though the train tracks ran through the middle of their neighborhood! This clearly demonstrated the challenges these students faced. No one had described or explained to them a prominent feature of their lives, so they did not possess the language to express it themselves.

In Closing the Achievement Gap for Students Raised in Poverty – Building Complex Language, Dr. Juntune equips teachers with activities and simple strategies to help students build complex language skills. Activities such as sketching and 10-minute bulletin boards can be incorporated into many different curriculum areas.

In this 1-hour course, teachers will learn:

  • Why having a complex language structure is essential to academic achievement
  • Strategies for building complex language
