Description
Though curriculum compacting can pose a challenge for many teachers, it offers many benefits as a form of differentiation for gifted learners. In this 1-hour course, presenters Tara Toft, the Coordinator for Advanced Academic Studies in Sandusky City Schools, and Dr. Julie McDonald, the Coordinator of Gifted Services for Huron City Schools, share the process for compacting curriculum to ensure mastery of grade level content standards and preparation for advanced standards in future years.
In this course, you will learn about:
- The benefits of using curriculum compaction
- The potential disadvantages of using curriculum compaction
- Identifying students who would benefit from curriculum compaction
- The steps for proper curriculum compaction
- Preparation for formal acceleration, the next step after curriculum compaction
This course addresses the following standards:
NAGC Standards 1.4, 1.7, 3.4, 3.6, 5.1, 5.3
ODE Competencies a, b, c

This course is a basic introductory course of what compaction is and when a student might need it. It does not give advice and examples on how to incorporate this into a curriculum.
Amanda – SOUTH TEXAS ISD (verified owner) –
Good information. Not really sure how to do this at the high school level.
Debbie – ECTOR COUNTY ISD (verified owner) –
This is interesting but needs more depth and time in order to process all of it. As a teacher I am not aware of most of the tools they are referring to.

I really liked the explanation on compacting curriculum and acceleration. I would love it if there was trainings here in Texas for this so we could help our GT students.
Jeff – DELAWARE CITY (verified owner) –
I Think that this was a very well done session and gave me so good ideas in the way of curriculum compaction. It also gave me ideas of how to determine when it is appropriate to accelerate curriculum.

I found it relevant since I am compacting 4th and 5th grade math. My 4th graders will skip the 4th grade Texas STAAR math assessment and will take the 5th grade version this year.

It is mostly aimed at middle and high school but the same concept can be used for lower grades in the elementary level. Just know your standards for your grade level and a grade level above.

It had some interesting points.
Alissa – MCALLEN ISD (verified owner) –
My district has a built-in acceleration program for my subject. Most of this is already being done.

Excellent Course
Kathryn – DRIPPING SPRINGS ISD (verified owner) –
I believe that this kind of differentiation should be for all students and it doesn’t need a name “compacting” that seems confusing.
ROBIN – BOERNE ISD (verified owner) –
I would have liked additional ideas for compacting-small group investigation, independent study, etc…
