In this 6-hour course, Lisa Van Gemert, highlights the importance of differentiated instruction in meeting the needs of every student with a focus on gifted students. She presents practical classroom strategies and draws a clear distinction between differentiation and “more-ferentiation” (or simply offering more work to gifted students). This course includes practical applications and downloadable handouts.
Broken up into five modules, Ms. Van Gemert provides in-depth information on:
- Guiding principles and key ideas for implementation
- Tactics for creating an environment for differentiation
- Strategies for content (including depth, complexity and student interest)
- The learning process (including options for tiering instruction)

I think that differentiating is one of the things I struggle the most with in my class. I think great information was presented, especially great examples of what not to do. I would have really liked examples of how to differentiate in my particular content area.

An obviously well thought out and researched topic, and I do think it is presented well. I will think about what strategies to use in the future of my planning. What concerns me and looses me is when a presenter says, “we haven’t thought about this for our arts, PE, sports, or electives teachers,” with a promise that something is coming. If arts, athletics, and other extra curricular teachers are supposed to be here and listen to the presentation it should already be relevant to us too AND give examples.
