Description
When it comes down to it, what we as teachers are doing in our classrooms is really about our students’ futures — not just about this week, month, or year. In this brief lesson from our Essentials series, Joyce Juntune, Ph.D., invites you to think about the skills your students will need when they are 30 and to reflect on whether what you’re teaching today will still matter to them in the future.
- Identify the year for which you should be teaching
- Keep your teaching focused on your students’ futures
- Get students involved in connecting classroom activities with the skills they think they’ll need as adults
- Involve other teachers in thinking toward the future as well.

I enjoyed the comment about focusing on perspective. If we are too focused on the immediate, we may miss out on big picture goals.
