Description
Making sure gifted students have quality instruction and challenging assignments is widely popular in the education world. But do you know exactly what it means to be gifted and why it matters? This six-hour course, “Identification & Assessment of the Gifted,” addresses issues surrounding gifted students and practical ways to identify them.
Lisa Van Gemert, a leading voice in gifted education, shares an overview of the history of gifted education and its importance today. Educators will also learn how to tell whether or not a student is gifted by using different tests and assessments. Teachers who have a thorough understanding of how to identify and assess gifted students will be able to equip and challenge these students better.
In this informative course educators will learn:
- What it means to be gifted
- Characteristics of gifted children
- How to test intelligence
- The importance of CLD populations
- Traits of twice-exceptional students

I really enjoyed this course and felt that the information was highly relevant. I also appreciate the presenter actually including a variety of different brain breaks and activities involving movement, actually showing us good lesson structure! Often times we are taught about it but never actually have it modelled to us, and when presenters actually structure their sessions this way it shows that they truly to believe in the importance of it for the educational process.

At times, I thought it was slightly difficult to relate back all the things Lisa brings up to my 7th grade math students, but maybe that’s just because I’m new to teaching and had two toddlers crawling all over me while I was trying to watch these trainings. I think it would be a tremendous help if we had access to her handouts that she provides to in person trainees.

Michael – SOUTH TEXAS ISD (verified owner) –
The state requires 30 hours of instruction. A bit much in my opinion. Therefore the instructor must fill the time. That being said, I learned a good bit about bias, tests, and how to improve IQ in oour own children.

Alexandra – SOCORRO ISD (verified owner) –
It is extensive and there are portions that could be summarized such as the parts where the teachers in person are being asked certain questions and we do not get to hear the questions the video should be cut, as well as areas where there are too many examples given and it takes away too much time. The structure of the module should preview reflective questions first then have the topics introduced or have the reflective questions immediately after the topic considering since it is so long certain things are forgotten.

I was really impressed in that usually video training are boring and ugly to watch (a waste of time).
But this GT training has been unique, I’ve learned lots, previous biases have been discovered and so much more.
PS: Let me suggest that you take these video trainings in sets of three hours. While you can do a six hour session, I do not recommend it; it really can be tiring and exhaustive due to the concentrated data/facts presented.
