Description
Making sure gifted students have quality instruction and challenging assignments is widely popular in the education world. But do you know exactly what it means to be gifted and why it matters? This six-hour course, “Identification & Assessment of the Gifted,” addresses issues surrounding gifted students and practical ways to identify them.
Lisa Van Gemert, a leading voice in gifted education, shares an overview of the history of gifted education and its importance today. Educators will also learn how to tell whether or not a student is gifted by using different tests and assessments. Teachers who have a thorough understanding of how to identify and assess gifted students will be able to equip and challenge these students better.
In this informative course educators will learn:
- What it means to be gifted
- Characteristics of gifted children
- How to test intelligence
- The importance of CLD populations
- Traits of twice-exceptional students

I really liked this course because it gave us ideas and insights of what to look for when identifying GT students. I also liked that it talked about GT students who also have disabilities. Just because you are labeled with a disability, doesn’t mean you can’t be GT and I liked that she talked about that.

A few things that would improve these modules include the following:
– Some of the instructor’s opinions are simply her opinions and not necessarily shared by her students (i.e. her mischaracterization and dismissal of Howard Gardner and psychotropic drugs [please read some criticism of The Emperor’s New Pill])
– I would not refer to myself as a guru as it implies that her students should simply follow her blindly as an unquestionable authority rather than a teacher.
– Most of the questions are simply recall. I think it would be more advantageous for the students (us) to use the ideas to build on our practice.
– Building off of my last criticism, I would also appreciate something a bit more differentiated. The pace is a little slow and therefore tedious. I would prefer to get the information in text form and later produce something that is either creative, evaluative, analytical, or some other higher-order thinking verb.
