Description
Students who score well on the screening test are considered for special educational programming and their needs, interests, and abilities are matched with the services that the school offers. But what about talented students who slip through the cracks of current screening methods. In this 1-hour course David Lohman, Ph.D., shares tools to design a screening program that avoids the twin pitfalls of failing to identify students who should be included or wrongly including students who do not need special services.
Dr. Lohman provides:
- Examples of exemplary practices
- The difference between identification and selection
- Distinctions between “gifted” and “talented”
- The elements of screening
- Common pitfalls illustrated using the CogAT Form 7 Screening Form

This course was hard for me. Lots of facts presented.
Lauren – WORTHINGTON CITY (verified owner) –
This was a detailed explanation of screening and identification practices; I think it’s most helpful for a gifted coordinator and not as helpful for a gifted teacher.
Janet – CLEBURNE ISD (verified owner) –
This course was very timely in that our district is purchasing the CogAT and we have been talking about local norms every time we meet. While technical in nature, it really helps you understand what the point of testing is, how to level the playing field and places an emphasis on matching your testing to your program.

Alison – BURLESON ISD (verified owner) –
I did not enjoy this course at all. I thought that it would help me as a classroom teacher to identify students who need a different kind of instruction, and it did not at all. The reflection questions required an additional 30-40 minutes of re-watching videos I had just watched and the final quiz question felt impossible to get correct because there was no set number of options to choose.
Nadia – EDINBURG CISD (verified owner) –
