Description
Students who score well on the screening test are considered for special educational programming and their needs, interests, and abilities are matched with the services that the school offers. But what about talented students who slip through the cracks of current screening methods. In this 1-hour course David Lohman, Ph.D., shares tools to design a screening program that avoids the twin pitfalls of failing to identify students who should be included or wrongly including students who do not need special services.
Dr. Lohman provides:
- Examples of exemplary practices
- The difference between identification and selection
- Distinctions between “gifted” and “talented”
- The elements of screening
- Common pitfalls illustrated using the CogAT Form 7 Screening Form

It’s interesting to me because I like numbers and things like that, but it felt highly irrelevant to me as a teacher. Also, the reflection questions asked really big questions that required a lot of synthesizing ideas from different places in the presentation. I like that type of challenge, but I wouldn’t call it a good use of my time.

I wish it had a transcript on the side to read what the professor is saying. Also some background, especially since I am not familiar with this. Make some interactive activities that we can use to check our knowledge along the way. On the last question if they could state there are more than one answer. When I got the answer wrong, it says I chose the wrong response, so I thought it was only for one answer and in fact I would need to choose several statements in the answer to be correct.

Way way WAY too many slides used. It is easy to get lost in all of this. This felt like an infomercial for the company the speaker works for than giving me needed information to help my GT students,

Bronson – ECTOR COUNTY ISD (verified owner) –
I really think that takes a different view point in terms of testing a student no matter what category you put them at on the chart
Sherri – CARROLLTON-FARMERS BRANCH ISD (verified owner) –
The speaker goes too fast, often times rambles or his voice trails off as if he is either rushing or self talking. The reflective questions should be given throughout the course not at the end. The questions are not all reflective of the important information in the lesson. It was frustrating and took longer than an hour since I had to go back a few times to rewatch the lesson.

The combination of a variety of assessments will help identify the gifted students. Both verbal and non verbal screenings are necessary. It is important to realize the different subject areas and just because a student is reading below grade level they may be gifted in other areas.

Went over my head.
