  25. Keni – Private Pay (verified owner)

This course is riddled with holes, half truths and fails to target its audience of teachers.
During this course, Ms. Van Gemert attributed a theory by Betts and Niehart to Annemarie Roeper. She erroneously railed against a misinterpretation of Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences and led her audience to believe that Gardner’s thought that his Multiple Intelligences theory did not belong in the schools. Gardner does not believe that LEARNING STYLES theory belongs in the classroom but that is not his theory. She skipped multiple prominent gifted theorist like Gagne and Tannenbaum. She briefly mentioned asynchronous learning but stated that ALL children develop differently (untrue). Actually typical children have synchronous development in the 4 domains while asynchronous learning is one of the key differentiations of GIFTED children. Ms. Van Gemert failed to target this module toward her audience: presumedly teachers of gifted students. She spent a great deal of time on interesting material, like the parts of the brain, and recommendations on how parents should raise their children which only peripherally applied to teachers. In the section on perfectionism she suddenly dropped Barbara Clark’s questioning theory as a solution without giving any explanation of who Barbara Clark is nor how these magic questions are usually used. The Gifted Guru is such a highly respected expert now in the Texas Gifted world that I was very excited to hear her course but clearly she was not quite as knowledgeable when she recorded this course around 2011.
