Description
One of the most important foundational aspects of working with gifted students is developing a deep understanding of them. What motivates them? How do they think? And how do they learn? Joyce Juntune, Ph.D. answers these questions and more in this 6-hour course. Dr. Juntune focuses on the nature and needs of gifted students, including the characteristics, social-emotional needs, and programming options. Understanding your gifted students is the starting point for preparing them for life-long success.
In this course you’ll learn to:
- Understand sources of energy in gifted students
- Identify indicators of giftedness
- Differentiate between high achievers and gifted students
- Understand statistical distribution
- Identify the four types of gifted students
- And much more!
This course is aligned with 2016 ODE Teacher Competencies d, e, and NAGC Teacher Preparation Standards 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 5.5.

I wish there was more individualized help. As a high school teacher with 160+ students and only 43 minutes of class I have a very hard time differentiating without it looking like extra work or favoritism. A lot of this changes as well with COVID restrictions.
Program is glitchy and took me twice as long to get through just from having to restart every time the slides froze. I still haven’t “completed” the program because I can’t get to some of the quizzes.

There are specific summary quiz questions I strongly disagree with. For example, the question about a GT student doing an assignment they perceive as “dumb” because they have an affinity for the teacher assigning it is clearly and extrinsic motivation, not an intrinsic one. The intrinsic motivation in that scenario is to NOT DO the “dumb” assignment. That student is over-riding that intrinsic motivator with an extrinsic one, their affinity for that teacher, an inherently extrinsic motivation. With the exception of flawed course assessment questions like this one, I enjoyed the lectures and the reflection questions, especially reading the comments of others.
