Description
One of the most important foundational aspects of working with gifted students is developing a deep understanding of them. What motivates them? How do they think? And how do they learn? Joyce Juntune, Ph.D. answers these questions and more in this 6-hour course. Dr. Juntune focuses on the nature and needs of gifted students, including the characteristics, social-emotional needs, and programming options. Understanding your gifted students is the starting point for preparing them for life-long success.
In this course you’ll learn to:
- Understand sources of energy in gifted students
- Identify indicators of giftedness
- Differentiate between high achievers and gifted students
- Understand statistical distribution
- Identify the four types of gifted students
- And much more!
This course is aligned with 2016 ODE Teacher Competencies d, e, and NAGC Teacher Preparation Standards 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 5.5.

I took this course with my mother (also a teacher) listening in the background. My mother was very annoyed with the tone and pitch of the speaker, who enthusiastically spoke first loudly, then softly, then was shrill, then calm. I was not bothered, other than the fact that I had to keep adjusting my volume so as not to wake my children.
The video presentation comes with paper print outs that, since I took this virtually, I did not get. Instead, I had to take screenshots to retain the information. That was annoying.
You are required to watch everything all the way through, which is hypocritical. This is a module about gifted students, yet the teachers are assumed to be neither high achievers nor gifted, since they are required to watch every sentence, side note and example in order to complete the module, despite if you answered all the quiz questions and did your reflection responses well or not. The reflection questions are basic, and the Quizzes are Multiple Choice/ True-False, which is horrible. This is a horrible way to assess the teachers who are taking this module. I could sleep through the auto-played videos, then guess through the Quiz (retake as many times as I need), and write some fluff for the Response, confident that no one will ever actually read it.
A better way would be to ask us, in our own words, to summarize certain concepts taught, such as… “In your own words, explain the main differences between a gifted student and a high achiever.”

Did not enjoy. “Gifted” is not a noun. Teacher “others” gifted students, and I would never guess that she considers herself gifted – if she didn’t mention it in every module.

This course is very interesting on the different ways of identify and help gifted students so that they can pursue what they want without being forced to just doing the work. Giving students options to complete tasks and providing choices will keep gifted students in the program.
