Description
Perfectionism doesn’t affect all of our gifted learners the same way, but it can cause them to struggle in the classroom. Some perfectionists focus on academic achievement, risk evasion, or controlling their images, and all have unique support needs. In this 1-hour course, Licking County Gifted Coordinator Heather Clark will walk you through the different types of perfectionism and strategies you can use to help students cope inside and outside of the classroom.
This course will help you:
- Compare healthy vs. dysfunctional traits associated with perfectionism
- Form an understanding of different types of perfectionists
- Gather tips and resources that will be helpful in coping with and supporting perfectionists inside and outside the classroom
- Apply new learning to classroom case studies in order to solidify knowledge
This course is aligned with:
ODE Teacher Competency d
NAGC Teacher Preparation Standards 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4

I did see some parallels to some of my students in the course. However, I do not enjoy PD opportunities in which I have to watch videos to get information. I prefer face to face or written work that I can read/study.

The course is organized and has clear learning goals. The presenter is not always clear with her examples of behaviors of the different types of procrastinators. The course was probably better as a live presentation than as a video course.

If you don’t have a solid hour to do this, don’t start it. I’m not showing aperfectionist trait here; I’m being honest about what happened to a co-worker. She couldn’t finish all at once, and not kowing that her answers wouldn’t save and that there was no option to stop and start, she had to start over. With her insight, I made sure I had a relatively uninterrupted hour to work on this.
Taking notes is fairly crucial as well.

This course was good. There was a question on the quiz about Academic Achievers. The correct answer was using mistakes as learning experiences. However, there was another answer that mentioned praising efforts. Both are listed on the Type 1 Academic Achiever slide, but choosing the answer that had both of them mentioned was incorrect. That was confusing.

interviewers ask questions to learn more about you and to find out things other than what may be on your application or resume. Interviewers may ask about your course selection to learn more about your personality, interests and goals. This question may help them gauge your interest in or passion for a particular subject or field.
