Description
There is a far more engaging and effective way to teach high school English classes to gifted students than the common approach of teaching each class as a stand-alone unit. By merging Pre-AP English 1, 2 and AP Language into one cohesive program you can gain the maximum benefit for students.
This online course will show you how to focus each Pre-AP course around specific skill sets and themes, how to zero in on each individual student’s specific abilities and challenges, and how to incorporate all three Pre-AP courses into one program designed in such a way that students graduate with a full arsenal of writing and analytical skills that have been steadily built upon and expanded in a purposeful way.

Kristin – PLANO ISD (verified owner) –
Most of this information is pretty standard best practices for both GT and non-GT students. I think I got more interesting tips and good ideas from the teacher comments at the bottom than from the lecturer, Katherine Harrison.
Sonja – UNITED ISD (verified owner) –
This is a very insightful course that will help any beginning Pre-AP English 1 and 2 educator.
Kourtney – ARLINGTON CLASSICS ACADEMY (verified owner) –
It was good.

Lee – EANES ISD (verified owner) –
I appreciate the timing at the bottom. The presenters know what they are talking about, but I really didn’t learn all that much. My school doesn’t have a GT program, so I can’t do all of the things they do in their classes.
Corinne – BASTROP ISD (verified owner) –
Sounds like she was in a pretty affluent district, would be nice to hear from a Title 1 teacher.
Kirsten – BASTROP ISD (verified owner) –
I gleaned a few new ideas.
Marly – WORTHINGTON CITY (verified owner) –
The examples from this discussion were very general. I was really looking for strategies and more concrete resources. For example, what brainstorming or mind mapping techniques are used to help students build their arguments for the Antigone mock trials? What organizational guidelines are employed to facilitate the team writing assignments?

The best part of this presentation is showing other districts how to set up an English Pre-Ap through AP curriculum program and use of their strategies and also being more flexible in types of assessments.

Great way of showing how to build into an AP English class across the curriculum. I’m glad to have listened to the AP teacher prior to this section. It allowed me to better see how the alignment works and it’s incredible to see these people work together. Still a little lengthy, but good nonetheless. Definitely took a lot of ideas away from this one and the series.

This course was fairly strong. I enjoyed the discussion about skills and strategies, but the course quiz at the end did not seem to actually assess the major take-aways from the course.
