Description

With English learners projected to make up a quarter of the public school population by 2025, it’s vital that all teachers — not just ESL teachers — become proficient in instructional methods that allow English learners to progress academically while developing proficiency in English.

This course, taught by Allison Hand, introduces participants to Sheltered Instruction, which uses course content as a vehicle for teaching language and which is considered to be an essential component of any program for English learners. Ms. Hand answers the following questions about Sheltered Instruction:

Who are our English learners?

  • Why do we use Sheltered Instruction in all classrooms?
  • What are the goals of Sheltered Instruction?
  • How do people acquire a second language?
  • How do I apply this information in my classroom?

I would rate my online course on Sheltered Instruction highly for its effectiveness in providing practical strategies to support English language learners in my classroom. The course clearly explained how to make academic content more accessible through scaffolding, visual aids, and language support, all while maintaining grade-level rigor. The examples and resources provided were relevant and applicable to my teaching. However, I would have appreciated more interactive components or real-world case studies to deepen my understanding. Overall, the course gave me valuable tools to help make content comprehensible and foster language development for all students.

  9. NIKO – BEAUMONT ISD (verified owner)

The ‘Sheltered Instruction’ course has been incredibly valuable in helping me understand how to make content more accessible for English language learners (ELLs) and diverse students. One of the key takeaways is how important it is to integrate language development with content instruction, ensuring that all students can engage with the material, no matter their proficiency level. I’ve learned strategies like scaffolding, using visuals, and incorporating cooperative learning, which will help my students better comprehend and retain the content. What I find most practical is how the course emphasizes the need to constantly check for understanding and adjust instruction to meet students where they are. It also encourages the use of multiple modalities—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—which I think is crucial in an art classroom where students benefit from hands-on learning. Overall, it’s given me concrete tools to create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
