Description
When supporting students with dyslexia, it’s important to see them as a student first, and then as a person with a learning difference. In this lesson, Lisa Van Gemert (Gifted Guru) takes this as her starting point, providing educators with ideas for recognizing their students’ strengths while supporting students in the areas that are most challenging for them.
Ms. Van Gemert walks through each idea category by category:
Some of the ideas shared include the following:
- Emphasize visuals whenever possible
- Highlight key words in instructions
- Use hands-on demonstrations and field trips
- Utilize guided notes
- Pay attention to the format of assignments
In addition to the lesson, Ms. Van Gemert provides three tutorials where she demonstrates several of the ideas discussed in the lesson.

I thought this course gave a lot of good information on interventions and support for students with dyslexia. I also liked that there was an entire slide on things that will cause issues, this was helpful because off the bat it gave you things that will most likely not work with your student and to find other options.
