  12. Ashley – PORT NECHES-GROVES ISD (verified owner)

This was a great course. I really liked how she gave enough information that I really did learn something about the science behind these disorders but was not overwhelmed with information. I really did learn some strategies to implement next year that will be easy and effective.

  13. Jacob – UNITED ISD (verified owner)

One would be to have a therapist give this presentation. There were many things that would be offensive if a student who had ADHD heard this.

She called ADHD medication “basically speed” which gives educators the idea that the medicine is basically an illegal drug.

She also says that ADHD is “obviously overdiagnosed” and that the diagnosing process is scary because it brands you for life. It is only scary to be labeled ADHD when there are people like the presenter who are prejudiced against the disorder and people seeking treatment. The truth is that it is an often genetic disorder that needs to be treated with medicine so that kids have an option to function and not develop other issues like anxiety and depression. If you learned about ADHD from this presentation, then you would probably be skeptical to want anyone you know be diagnosed with ADHD, but it could actually be saving their life. People with ADHD have a much shorter life expectancy when it is untreated.

I really enjoy all of Lisa Van Gemert’s presentations. Really appreciate her breaking each of these families down into how to recognize it (potentially), how it can be treated, but most relevant to me, how to deal with it “within the ideal classroom”. Very relevant with more and more students experiencing trauma, being diagnosed.

Many of these solutions will definitely find their way into my classroom. That said, I felt like I was preached at for a lot of this presentation. Still enjoyed it and definitely got a lot out of it.
